Bookseller extraordinaire!
Updated: Sep 7
An avid reader needs a good supplier of books. For C.S. Lewis, this was Blackwell's on Broad Street in Oxford. Jack was a regular customer and even encouraged WWII evacuee Jill Flewett to charge books to his account.
For serious readers of C.S. Lewis, may I recommend Hearts & Minds Books in Dallastown PA, owned by Byron and Beth Borger (www.heartsandminds.com). Have no fear, the bulk of their business is by mail order.
I discovered Hearts & Minds while attending a conference of the C.S. Lewis Institute in Washington DC over 20 years ago. Hearts & Minds operated the book table. On that occasion, Byron Borger hand-sold me Lewis's Latin Letters, containing his correspondence with the Italian priest Fr. Giovanni Calabria.
Several years later, my book club chose to read Lyle Dorsett's biography of Joy Davidman, titled And God Came In. However we ran into a problem; it was out of print. Byron Borger to the rescue. He telephoned Lyle Dorsett and procured the dozen copies we needed from the author's personal stash in his basement. This, my friends, is an extraordinary bookseller.

“The great thing is to be always reading ... Your book bill ought to be your biggest extravagance.” (Letter to Derek Brewer dated 8 April 1941 from Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Volume 3, in the supplement, page 1540-1541).
